The successor of infamous Kyoto protocol should be only couple of months away but the world still can’t agree on what are required cuts in greenhouse gases to fight against climate change. The more closer we are to this new climate deal the more likely it looks like that we won’t see drastic cuts in greenhouse gas emissions because rich countries are still highly reluctant to accept major CO2 cuts.
Many estimates and different climate models suggest how world should make a greenhouse gases cut of 25-40 per cent to give the world a chance of avoiding a lethal 2 degree temperature rise – that many experts see as trigger for serious climate changes that will lead the world into a real environmental disaster.
By the current looks of it rich countries are not prepared to go beyond 15 % cuts which will not be enough to stop climate change impact. Such low targets give virtually no chance of halting warming to 2 degrees Celsius, and climate change impact could grow much bigger in years to come causing many endangered animals, severe water shortages, extreme weather events, flooding and droughts.
But politics still doesn’t look worried. Politicians care more about how to revive economy and their industries than how to tackle climate change. If nothing changes in next few months the new climate deal will be even bigger failure than its predecessor Kyoto protocol.
