Thanksgiving in Canada

Contrary to popular belief Americans are not the only ones who celebrate thanksgiving. It is true that the majority of us have thoughts of Pilgrims, Indians, and turkey’s when we are thinking of Thanksgiving. That is because it is traditionally known that the Indians to aid in the survival of the Pilgrims, in the new world. Then they celebrated as a group. But, other countries have Thanksgiving traditions as well and Canada is one of those. Oh, the Thanksgiving season in Canada is not exactly like the Thanksgiving holiday in America. The two don’t exactly run on the same lines. The United States observe Thanksgiving in November on the fourth Thursday of the month. The second Monday of each October is when Canada celebrates Thanksgiving.

 

Canadian Thanksgiving celebrations started as a government edict. Thanksgiving was started as a celebration of faith in America. Thanksgiving is religious in Canada as well. But, most people in Canada celebrate the holiday even if they are agnostic. Among the numerous similarities shared by Canadians and Americans in their celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday is the bountiful meal shared by friends and family that showcases the fruits of the harvest.  Here are a number of goodies listed below, Turkey, potatoes, dressing, cranberry, and pumpkin pie.

 

The first Thanksgiving was celebrated by Martin Frobisher, an early Canadian. A settler by the name of Frobisher looked for the Northwest passage. However, his search was unsuccessful. He put on a glorious party after his found help in Newfoundland. During the same times, the French settlers were successful at crossing the ocean. Once they arrived in Canada with Samuel de Champlain, they had a big celebration with the Indians.

 

The Thanksgiving Day holiday in Canada occurs earlier in the year than it does in America. In Canada Thanksgiving marks the end of the harvest season.
