Arguably the most potent social drama ever conceived in this country, Do Bigha Zameen follows the heartrending plight of a peasant from his village.
Burdened by feudal financial obligations, Shambhu (Balraj Sahani) migrates to kolkata with his son (Rattan Kumar). As the two strangers in a cold heartless city try to find their bearings, director Bimal Roy searches out a core of humanity in the wretched conditions of the grassroot people of this land. The reverberation of Roy’s treatise on socialism was far-flung and profound.
Four years later, Mehboob Khan made Mother India, a monumental ode to peasantry. Balraj Sahani’s naturalistic performance went a long way in giving the narrative a shaded and layered structure. Salil Chowdhury’s arresting music borrows elements from Russian patriotic tunes and North Indian folk music.
